Child Support Calculations Are Based on A Complex Formula
Figuring out how much you can expect to end up paying on child support is not exactly a straightforward process. This is because the formula that courts use to calculate this amount involves a variety of factors. These can include the income level of each parent, the total number of children, the amount of time that each child spends with either parent, and more.
There Are No Limits On Child Support Payment Amounts
Along those same lines, many of our clients are surprised to learn that California does not have any set limits on the total amount of child support payments that someone can be ordered to pay. Unless there are very rare and specific circumstances at play, all rulings on child support made by the courts are considered valid.
Child Support Is Required Until The Child Graduates And/Or Turns 18
Parents can expect to carry the legal obligation of paying child support until their child turns 18 and successfully graduates from high school. Support can sometimes be extended for one more year if the child has yet to graduate high school, which is usually terminated once he/she graduates or turns 19.
We hope these guidelines can provide you with some of the answers that you seek. To learn more about child support guidelines in California, and to speak with one of our qualified family law attorneys, be sure to reach out to The White Oak Law, P. C.
