An Updated Look At California Divorce Statistics in 2024
During and briefly after the pandemic, California and other states experienced increased rates of divorce. Now, looking back a few years later, what does the landscape look like? Recent divorce statistics for the state were published earlier this year, and the results show interesting, changing trends.
Today, we’re taking a look at these updated stats and discussing some of the various factors that can impact overall trends of divorce rates across CA.
Divorce Rates in 2024 Trend Downward
As per the updated figures, the current divorce rate in CA is roughly 90 divorces to every 1000 people per year. Despite the small bump seen during the pandemic years, this decreased rate goes in hand with the overall trend that the state has seen since 2014.
As of now, California is one of the states with the lowest divorce rates. It sits in sharp contrast to the following states with the highest divorce rates in the country: Kentucky, Wyoming, Alaska, West Virginia, And Arkansas.
What Factors Contribute to Divorce Rates in CA?
- People wait longer to marry: These days, the average age of marriage is 28 for women and 30 for men. This has gone up by around 10 years from the 1950’s, where the median age for marriage was 20 for women and 22 for men.
- Overall less marriages in the state: In addition, even more and more people are opting to simply not marry at all, but either remain single or in a domestic relationship with a partner.
- Mediation and alternative divorce resolutions: The added number of tools available to potential divorcees means that less traditional divorces are taking place. From mediation to uncontested separation, there are plenty of simpler options when ex-partners are able to work with each other.
- Economic factors: It’s no secret that the economy has been tough. During moments when people are being squeezed financially, many people opt to delay marriage, having kids, and taking other major milestones as they work to secure financial stability.
